Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) obtains protocol addresses of neighboring devices and discovers the
platform of those devices. Using it with the MIB database allows applications to learn the device and the
SNMP agent address of neighboring devices. CDP uses the CISCO-CDP-MIB.
Each device configured for CDP sends periodic messages, known as advertisements, to a multicast
address. Each device advertises at least one address at which it can receive SNMP messages.
Advertisements also contain time-to-live, or hold time, information, that indicates the length of time that
a receiving device holds CDP information before discarding it. Each device also listens to the CDP
messages sent by others to learn when the media interfaces of neighboring devices go up or down.
CDP Version-2 is the latest release of the protocol. With CDP Version-2, detailed information is provided
on the VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) management domain and duplex modes of neighbor devices,
CDP-related counters, and VLAN IDs of connecting ports. This helps Ethernet gateway configuration.
CDP is run on server switches over both management-Ethernet and management-IB interfaces.
Examples The following example displays the CDP advertisement information:
