B. General Maintenance
Inspection:Inspectthesystemattheapplianceconnection
andatthechimneytop.Coolersurfacestendtobuildcreosote
depositsquicker,soitisimportanttocheckthechimneyfrom
thetopaswellasfromthebottom.
Formation and Need For Removal:Whenwoodisburned
slowly, it produces tar and other organic vapors which
combinewithexpelledmoisturetoformcreosote.
Thecreosotevaporscondenseintherelativelycoolchimney
ueofanewly-startedoraslow-burningre.Asaresult,
creosote residue accumulates on the uelining. When
ignited,thiscreosotecreatesanextremelyhotrewhichmay
damagethechimneyorevendestroythehouse.
Thechimney connectorandchimneyshould beinspected
onceevery2monthsduringtheheatingseasontodetermine
ifacreosoteorsootbuilduphasoccurred.Ifcreosoteorsoot
hasaccumulated,itshouldberemovedtoreducetheriskof
achimneyre.
1. Creosote (Chimney) Cleaning
• Frequency: Every 2months during heatingseason or
as recommended by a certied chimney
sweep;morefrequentlyifchimneyexceeds
orisunder14-16ft.(measuredfrombottom
ofappliance)

Removeallashfromthereboxandextinguishallhotembers
before disposal. Allow the appliance to cool completely.
Disconnectuepipeorremovebafeandceramicblanket
fromappliancebeforecleaningchimney.Otherwiseresidue
can pile up on top ofthe bafe and ceramic blanket and
theappliancewillnotworkproperly.(SeeBafeRemoval
onpage 31).Closethedoortightly.Thecreosoteorsoot
should be removed with a brushspecically designed for
thetypeofchimneyinuse.Cleanoutfallenashesfromthe
rebox.
It is also recommended that before each heating season
theentiresystembeprofessionallyinspected,cleanedand
repairedifnecessary.

Ashes should be placed in a metal container with a
tight tting lid. The closed container of ashes should
beplacedonanon-combustibleoororontheground,
wellawayfromallcombustiblematerials,pendingnal
disposal.Iftheashesaredisposedofbyburialinsoil
orotherwiselocallydispersed,theyshouldberetained
intheclosedcontaineruntilallcindershavethoroughly
cooled.
3. Glass Cleaning

Clean glass with a non-abrasive glass cleaner. Abrasive
cleaners may scratch and cause glass to crack. If the
deposits on the glass are not very heavy, normal glass
cleaners workwell. Heavier depositsmay be removedby
using a damp cloth dipped in wood ashes or by using a
commerciallyavailableovencleaner.
Afterusingan ovencleaner,itis advisabletoremoveany
residuewithaglasscleanerorsoapandwater.Ovencleaner
leftonduringthenextringcanpermanentlystaintheglass
anddamagethenishonplatedmetalsurfaces.
Aportionofthecombustionairenteringthereboxisdeected
downovertheinsideofthedoorglass.Thisairow“washes”
theglass,helpingtokeepsmokefromadheringtoitssur-
face.
Whenoperatedatalowburnrate,lessairwillbeowingover
theglassandthesmokey,relativelycoolconditionofalow
rewillcausetheglasstobecomecoated.
OperatingtheappliancewiththeBurnRateAirControland
Start-UpAirControlallthewayopenfor15-20minutesshould
removethebuiltupcoating.
