SEAMING
ULTRA
STRETCH
On
most
knits,
a
1/4
inch
finished
seam,
such
as
ultra
stretch
or
the
double
overlock
stitch,
is
more
desirable
than
a
5/8
inch
opened
seam
al
lowance.
These
stitches
can
create
a
neater,
more
professional
finish,
eliminate
bulky
seams,
prevent
curling,
permit
the
garment
to
“give”
under
stress,
and
at
the
same
time
they
cut
down
on
the
amount
of
work
involved
in
making
a
garment,
If
ever
in
doubt
as
to
which
of
the
two
stitches
to
use,
test
both
on
the
particular
fabric
in
question
and
choose
according
to
their
performance.
The
stitch
and
overcast
stitch
is
excellent
for
stretch
fabrics
such
as
sweater
knits,
bathing
suit
knits,
and
cotton
knits.
It
has
the
greatest
strength
and
elasticity
of
all.
For
patterns
with
1/4
inch
seam
allowances:
Feed
the
fabric
such
that
the
needle
goes
over
the
raw
edge
of
the
fabric
when
it
swings
to
the
right.
For
patterns
with
5/8
inch
seam
allowances:
Feed
the
raw
edge
of
the
fabric
along
the
etched
guide
line
“1/2”,
then
trim
away
the
excess
fabric
close
to
the
stitching.
