Pilot burner fl ame (Figure 16)
PROPER pilot fl ame characteristics
1. Blue fl ame.
2. Inner cone engulfi ng pilot fl ame sensor.
3. Pilot fl ame sensor glowing cherry red.
IMPROPER pilot fl ame characteristics:
1. Overfi red — Large fl ame lifting or blowing past pilot
fl ame sensor.
2. Underfi red — Small fl ame. Inner cone not engulfi ng
pilot fl ame sensor.
3. Lack of primary air — Yellow fl ame tip.
4. Incorrectly heated pilot fl ame sensor.
Main burner fl ame (Figure 17)
PROPER main burner fl ame characteristics
1. Yellow-orange streaks may appear (caused by
dust).
IMPROPER main burner fl ame characteristics
1. Overfi red — Large fl ames.
2. Underfi red — Small fl ames.
3. Lack of primary air — Yellow tipping on fl ames
(sooting will occur).
Start-up — if boiler doesn’t start . . .7c
1. Loose connections, blown fuse or service switch
off?
2. High limit switch set below boiler water tempera-
ture?
3. Thermostat set below room temperature?
4. Gas not turned on at meter or boiler?
5. Incoming gas pressure less than:
5” w.c. for natural gas?
11” w.c. for propane gas?
6. If none of the above corrects the problem, refer to
Troubleshooting, Section 11 of this manual.

If you discover evidence of any gas leak, shut down the
boiler at once. Find the leak source with bubble test and
repair immediately. Do not start boiler again until cor-
rected. Failure to comply could result in severe personal
injury, death or substantial property damage.
