External Inspection & Cleaning of the
Flame-trap
Although not likely to occur, if debris collects on the flame-
trap, use a vacuum, compressed air, or a soft bristle brush
to remove it.
NOTE: If unable to inspect or clean the flame trap from
underneath, follow the “Cleaning the Combustion Chamber
and Flame-trap” section instructions.

Cleaning the Combustion Chamber and
Flame-trap
1. Follow procedure outlined in “Removing the Manifold
Assembly”.
2. Use a vacuum cleaner/shop vac to remove all loose
debris in the combustion chamber (Figure 33B). Use
compressed air to clear any dust or debris that may
have accumulated in the flame-trap.
3. Reassemble following the procedure under “Replacing
the Manifold Assembly”.

Installing Air Filter Assembly:
Trim excess material, making
sure there is enough to overlap
by 4 inches (100 mm).
If the water heater has a
sensor, the air filter must be
trimmed around sensor.
Discard piece
after trimming.
Filter clip end on the
air filter assembly.
Attach the filter clip as
shown, holding the air
filter assembly in place.
Flush fit against bottom
of drain pan and/or floor.
Fit around sensor (if present),
then wrap the air filter assembly
around the bottom of the water
heater (NOTE: Clip on top edge.)
Drain pan removed for clarilty.
