DISPOSAL
All ionisation smoke alarms contain a
small amount of radioactive material
(Americium 241). The radiation from this
source is over 10,000 times less than
natural background radiation from the
ground, buildings and outer space.
Experts have stated that the risk is
minuscule - the equivalent of moving
to the floor above and being that
much closer to the sun! The National
Radiological Protection Board carries
out extensive tests on ionisation smoke
alarms and have concluded that they
are radiologically safe. They also
consider that it is safe to dispose of old
smoke alarms in normal household
rubbish, at the rate of one per bin of
household refuse.
Please note that there are no special
disposal requirements for the lithium cells
used as back-up in Ei mains powered
alarms as they do not contain any
regulated materials.
