The valvemust bemarkedwith a maximum setpressurenut
to exceedthe marked hydrostaticworking pressureof the
water heater (150 IbsJsq.in.) and a dischargecapacitynut
lessthan thewater heater inputrate asshownon the model
ratingplate. (Electricheaters- watts dividedby 1000x 3415
equalBTU/Hr. rate.)
Yourlocaljurisdictionalauthority,whilemandatingthe useofa
temperature-pressurerelief valvecomplyingwith ANSI Z21.22
andASME,mayrequirea valvemodeldifferentfromthe onefur-
nishedwiththe waterheater.
Compliancewith suchlocalrequirementsmustbe satisfiedby
the installeror enduserof the water heaterwith a locallypre-
scribedtemperature-pressurereliefvalveinstalledin the desig-
nated openingin the water heaterin placeof the factoryfur-
nishedvalve.
Forsafeoperationofthe waterheater,the reliefvalvemustnut
beremovedfromit'sdesignatedopeningorplugged.
Thetemperature-pressurereliefvalvemust beinstalleddirectly
intothefittingofthewaterheaterdesignatedforthe reliefvalve.
Positionthe valvedownwardandprovidetubingsothat anydis-
chargewillexit onlywithin 6 inchesabove,or at anydistance
belowthe structuralfloor.Be certainthat no contactismade
withanyliveelectricalpart.The dischargeopeningmustnot be
blockedor reducedin sizeunderany circumstances.Excessive
length,over30 feet,or useofmore than four elbowscancause
restrictionand reducethedischargecapacityofthevalve.
No valveor otherobstructionisto he placedbetweenthe relief
valveand the tank. Do nut connecttubing directlyto discharge
drainunlessa 6"air gapisprovided.Topreventbodilyinjury,haz-
ardto life,or propertydamage,the reliefvalvemustbeallowed
todischargewaterinquantitiesshouldcircumstancesdemand.If
thedischargepipeisnot connectedto a drainor othersuitable
means, the water flow may cause property
damage.
The DischargePipe:
Mustnut besmallerinsizethan the outlet pipesizeofthe
valve,or haveanyreducing couplingsor otherrestrictions.
Mustnot bepluggedor blocked.
Must be ofmaterial listedfor hotwater distribution.
Mustbe installedsoasto allowcomplete drainageofbeth
the temperature-pressurerelief valve,and the discharge
pipe.
Mustterminate at an adequatedrain.
Mustnot haveany valvebetweenthe reliefvalveand tank.
AWARNING

any access panels or servicing the water heater, make
sure the electrical supp.lyto the water heater is turned
"OFF". Failure to do this could result in DEATH, SERI-

HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Water heaters are
intended to produce hot water. Water heated to a tem-
_eratore whichwill satisfy spaceheating,clotheswashing,
dish washing, and other sanitizing needs can scald and
_ermanently injure you upon contact. Some people are
more likely to be permanently injured by hot water than
others. These includethe elderly,children,the infirm, or
physically/mentally handicapped. If anyone using hot
water in your home fits into one of these groups or if
there isa localcode or state law requiring a certain tem-
perature water at the hot water tap, then you must take
specialprecautions.In addition to usingthe lowest possi-
ble temperature setting that satisfies your hot water
needs,a means suchas a mixing valve, shallbe used at
the hot water taps used bythese people or at the water
heater. Mixing valvesare availableat plumbing supplyor
hardware stores. Follow manufacturers instructions for
installationof the valves.Beforechangingthe factoryset-
ting on the thermostat, read the "Temperature
Regulation"sectionin this manual.

WATER HEATERS EQUIPPED FOR ONE VOLTAGE
ONLY: This water heater isequippedfor onetype voltage
only.Checkthe rating plate near the bottom accesspanel
for the correct voltage. DO_NOT.use.tJ_s_water heater
with anyvoltage other than the oneshownon the model
rating plate. Failure to use the correc_mltage cancause
problemswhich can result in DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY

INSULATING JACKETS:-When installing-an external
water heater insulation jacket on an electric water
heater:
a. DO NOT coverthe temperature-pressure relief valve.
b. DO NOT put insulationover the accesscoversor any
access areas.
c. DO NOT cover or remove operating instructions,and
safety related warning labelsand materials affixed to the
water heater.

A CAUTION
WATER HEATERS EVENTUALLY LEAK: Installation of
the water heater must be accomplishedin sucha manner
that if the tank or anyconnectionsshouldleak,the flowof
water will not causedamageto the structure. When such
locationscannot be avoided,a suitable drain pan should
be installedunder the water heater. Drain pansare avail-
able at your localSearsStore. Sucha drain pan must be
piped to an adequate drain. Under no circumstances is
the manufacturer or Searsto be held liable for anywater
damage in connectionwith thiswater heater.
