Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve

At the time of manufacture thiswater heater was provided
with acombinationtemperature-presseresrelief valvecertified
by a nationally recognized testinglaboratory that maintains
_eriodicinspectionofproductionof listedequipmentor mate-
rials, as meeting the requirements for Relief Valvesand
AutomaticGasShutoffDevicesfor MotWater SupplySystems,
and the latest editionofANSI Z21.22 andthe code require-
ments of ASME.If replaced, thevalvemustmeet the require-
ments oflocalcodes,butnotlessthana combinationtempera-
tore and pressurerelief valvecertifiedasmeetingtherequire-
mentsfor ReliefValvesandAutomaticGasShutoffDevicesfor
Hot Water SupplySystems,ANSI Z21.22bya nationallyrecog-
nized testinglaboratorythat maintainsperiodicinspectionof
productionoflistedequipmentor materials.
The valvemustbe markedwith a maximumsetpressurenot
to exceedthe marked hydrostaticworking pressureof the
waterheater (150Ibsdsq.in.)anda dischargecapacitynot less
thanthewaterheaterinputrate asshownonthe modelrating
plate.(Electricheaters- watts dividedby 1000x 3415 equal:
BTU/Hr.rate.)
Yourlocaljurisdictionalauthority,whilemandatingtheuseofa
temperature-pressurereliefvalvecomplyingwith ANSI Z21.22
and ASME,mayrequire a valvemodeldifferentfrom the one
furnishedwiththewaterheater.
Compliancewithsuchlocalrequirements mustbe satisfiedby
the installeror enduserofthe waterheaterwitha locallypre-
scribedtemperature-pressurerelief valveinstalledin thedesig-
nated openingin the water heaterinplaceofthe factoryfur-
nishedvalve.
Forsafeoperationofthe waterheater,therelief valvemustnot
be removedfromit'sdesignatedopeningor plugged.
The temperature-pressurereliefvalvemust be installeddirectly
intothefittingofthewaterheaterdesignatedforthereliefvalve.
Positionthe valvedownwardandprovidetubingsothat anydis-
chargewillexit onlywithin 6 inchesabove,or at anydistance
below thestructuralfloor.Be certainthat no contactismade
withanyliveelectricalpart.The dischargeopeningmust notbe
Mockedor reducedin sizeunder anycircumstances.Excessive
length,over30 feet,oruseofmorethan fourelbowscancause
restriction andreducethedischargecapacityofthe valve.
No valveor otherobstructionistobe placedbetweentherelief
valveandthe tank. Do not connecttubingdirectlyto discharge
drainunlessa6"air gapisprovided.Topreventbodilyiniury,haz-
ardto life,or propertydamage,the reliefvalvemustbeallowed
todischargewaterinquantitiesshouldcircumstancesdemand.If
the dischargepipeisnot connectedto a drainor othersuitable
means,thewaterflowmaycausepropertydamage.
The DischargePipe:
Mustnot be smallerin sizethan the outlet pipe sizeof the
valve,or haveanyreducingcouplingsor otherrestrictions.
Mustnot bepluggedor blocked.
Mustbe ofmateriallistedforhotwaterdistribution.
Must beinstalledsoasto allowcompletedrainageof both
the temperature-pressurerelief valve, and the discharge
pipe.
Mustterminate atanadequatedrain.
Mustnothaveanyvalvebetweentherelief valveandtank.
AWARNING
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be manually
operated at leastonce a year.Caution shouldbe taken to
ensurethat (I) no one isin front of or aroundthe outlet of
the temperature-pressurerelief valvedischargeline,and(2)
the water manually dischargedwill not causeany bodily
injury or property damage because the water may be
extremelyhot.
If after manually operatingthe valve,it failsto completely
reset and continuesto releasewater, immediatelyclosethe
cold water inlet to the water heater, follow the draining
instructions,and replace the temperature-pressurerelief
valvewith anew one.

perature-pressure rebel valvelisted as complying with the standardfor relief valvesand
automatic gas shut-off devices for hot water supply systems, ANSI Z21.22. For safe
opera(ion ofthe water heater, the relief vatve must notbe removedfrom i_ 6es_natec_
point of installation or plugged.
Your local jurisdictional authority, while mandating the use of a temperature-pressure
relief valvecomplying with ANSI Z21.22 and ASME,mayrequire a valve model different
from the one furnished with the water heater
Compliancewith such local requirements must be satisfied by the installer or end user
of the water heater with a locally prescribedtemperature-pressure relief valve installed
in the designated opening inthe water heater
