When heater is set at 75 degrees , as it reaches ...

When heater is set at 75 degrees , as it reaches that temp it makes a loud bang like metal expanding, then as it reaches the temp, and shuts off and the metal starts cooling down it makes that loud bang again. Sounds like the casing is expanding but should this always happen?
