Some guy from the whirlpool brand told me to open ...

Some guy from the whirlpool brand told me to open the hot water faucet when taking a shower only. But my question is what if the water comes too hot, can i use the cold water to regulate the temperature. Is there any risk of malfuction or can i provoque a fault when doing it? the equipament is the WK71212Q water heater.
