5 Your problem appears to be the Thermocouple. The thermocouple is the device near the pilot that senses heat from the pilot light. If there is no heat generated from the pilot, there is a safety on the gas regulator which will shut the gas flow off. If the thermocouple is defective, it will not send a signal back to the regulator to maintain a gas flow to the pilot. It is relatively a simple replacement, but making sure the end of the thermocouple is near enough the flame to sense heat.
