5 We purchased the same hot water heater from Lowe's on 5/1/08. A few weeks ago we had the same problem. I did a search on the internet (I should have done it sooner) and found that the Whirlpool Flame Lock Water Heaters are Junk. I printed out a stack of pages from the internet and went to Lowes. The manager there insisted she had no idea there were problems, but the guys in the plumbing department knew. We ended up tearing out the Whirlpool heater and returning it. She did give us our money back, but I wasn't leaving until she did. We then bought a Rheem water heater and had it installed. I will not shop at Lowes again. They should take those heaters off the shelves. We trusted Lowes and we trusted the salesman who claimed it was great.

0 You probably need to replace the thermocoupler; it's a heat sensor that protrudes into the pilot flame, controls the gas flow. Lowe's carries replacments. Be careful not to tear the manifold door gasket getting the manifold assembly out.
