My Whirlpool Portable A/C unit makes a loud noise ...

My Whirlpool Portable A/C unit makes a loud noise every two minutes and I can't fall asleep. If I empty the water, the problem seems to go away for the first 5-10 minutes, so basically if there is any water at all it cycles witha loud 4 second noise. What to do?
