Question About Trane Thermostat XT300C

I have bought a house built in October, 1999 with a Trane XT300C thermostat in it. Having trouble programming it. This model has no buttons for up and down arrows or I for info codes on the side. There is a window and space for them, but no buttons. Is this a modified model or has it been defaced? Any info would be appreciated
