0 tbarton1983, Manually start winding some thread from the reel unto the bobbin. Place the bobbin onto the bobbin winder spindle on top of the sewing machine and push the winder (with the bobbin on it) to the right. Then, press in the icon on the inner face of the handwheel to disengage the handwheel from the motor. When you press the pedal, the bobbin with transfer the thread from the reel/spool to the bobbin, as needed. Hope that helps...
