Question About Superior Indoor Fireplace KR-38

I have a gas fireplace in my apartment. It says kr-38 by superior. It is a gas fireplace and I had multiple questions. What do I need to do to start the fireplace. It has a gate on the front and it has a chimney, but can we burn real wood? What is the lever on the side that says "pull to open"? thanks, wanting to have a fire-safe winter
