Upon opening the overhead garage door from inside ...

Upon opening the overhead garage door from inside the garage push button or from the outside remote, the garage door "jerks" roughly and then opens. It does NOT do this when closing the door. It appears to be some play in the chain when it's being pulled to open. How can this be fixed or adjusted?
