the sewing machine sews backwards but won't sew fo...

the sewing machine sews backwards but won't sew forward what am i doing wrong? I haven't hardly used it but it has been about 10 yrs since I have tried to sew with it. I have been trying to do what the instructions say but is hard to unerstand can you help me?
