trying to use an old machine that I have had for years (only owner and have not used in the last 15 years) When it stitches it is sewing huge loops on the underside of the material and no matter what I try for tension (assuming it was a tension problem) nothing seems to fix it...help! PS it has been cleaned and oiled

0 I had the same problem. Here is how I solved it. You need to take the tension mechanism apart. Take pieces off slowly so you can see how it goes back together. It looks complicated but actually is quite simple. The last set of pieces with the second spring and discs comes off as an assemblage of parts but just slides off. The long slot in the threaded shaft, in my case, was not clear all the way to the end. There was a loose axel that protruded out preventing the tensioner from tightening. The axel has a flattened screw driver shaped end. If you tilt the machine towards you it will just fall out. I am not sure what purpose it serves or served but it seems to have fallen out of position and I was not able to coax it back in. However, leaving it out and reinstalling the tensioner mechanism with out it allows the tensioner to function properly once again. The loops under the fabric are caused because of complete lack of tension from the upper thread. Your problem should now be solved.
