Question About Singer Sewing Machine 8280

I'm pretty sure I have the needle and bobbin threaded correctly, but when I try to so, the needle goes up and down and the bobbin goes round but thevthreads don't interlock, so no actual sewing takes place. I am probably making a very stupid beginner mistake, but I can't see what it is.
