how do I alter the stitch tension .. I get a stitc...

how do I alter the stitch tension .. I get a stitch on the underside but the stitch on the topside is a line with loops over and doesn't look right. I think it is something to do with the tension but I have no idea how to alter it. I've tried trial and error but haven't stumbled across the answer !!
