red wire is attached at RH but loose, not attached to anything. This is an old thermostat, appreciate any help.

1 Suddenly my thermostat is acting as if the batteries were removed and replaced. It went to 70 degrees. I removed it from the wall and replaced the batteries, it now doesn't work at all. The display remains blank. I swapped it with the same model downstairs and it still is blank.

0 If I understand you correctly, the red wire coming from the circuit is attached to RH, but a second wire attached to RH has one loose end. The loose end needs to be attached to the RC connection.
