5 You need to check the coils on the inside of the air handler. The air handler is the part that is inside your house. If the coils are frozen up, then you have an air flow issue. In this case you need to shut down the system and allow the ice to melt from the coils. While you are waiting for this to happen, check your air filter. It should be clean. If it is clogged up with dust, it may be reducing the airflow to the coils, causing them to become too cold, and ice up. If you recently replaced the filter with a new filter, it may also be caused by restricted airflow due to the type of filter you have installed. Pleated paper filters can reduce the airflow across the coils significantly, and create the same problem. To access the coils, turn off the system at the thermostat, then remove the front cover from the air handler itself. Be careful not to touch any wires, because they may be live, but you should now be able to see the coils. If they are iced up, then that is likely your problem. If they are NOT iced up, make sure that the coils on the compressor (the outside part of the system) are also not iced or somehow otherwise obstructed. Sometimes leaves can get built up inside the metal box that houses the compressor and can obstruct the airflow across these coils. You can clean the leaves from the compressor, by opening the thing up and scooping them out with a dustpan. Then rinse the coils well with a garden hose with a spray nozzle. Again, make sure to turn the compressor OFF before doing this. There is usually a switch that looks similar to a breaker box on the wall near your compressor. Electricity is dangerous, harmful and even fatal! Good luck.
