Rite-temp model 8022C won’t shut off. Turned to ...

Rite-temp model 8022C won’t shut off. Turned to OFF, lowered temp, turned to cool and A/C came on. I turned to heat, raised the heat above the current temp and heard the click. Reset t-stat and replaced the batteries. Turned off circuit breaker but then house got smoky so turned it back on. Removing the RC and RH wires didn't help.
