thread forming a jumble of threads on back of fabr...

thread forming a jumble of threads on back of fabric, front thread breaking. this used to be my go to machine but i can;t remember how t thread it ad have no manual, does the needle thread from front to back? what should the tension be set at, we have hundreds od things to sew for dysfor girls and my machine is misbehaving.
