Grating scraping sound coming from unit when I swi...

Grating scraping sound coming from unit when I switch it on so too scared to turn it on. The home has been rented for 6 years so not sure why and how long it has not worked properly. How old is this model and does it sound like it can be fixed with a service or cheaper to buy and install a new one? Please reply. Thanks
