Why does my Nordyne Split System pop the 220 A/C b...

Why does my Nordyne Split System pop the 220 A/C breaker when the system is turn on for ac? When I pull the conection plug at the unit the breaker will not pop. Is the compressor bad? Or can somthing elese be check at unit? Please help Thankyou. Note the thermostat can be set anywhere the circuit will still break.
