my 1988 air conditioner is making a subtle noise (...

my 1988 air conditioner is making a subtle noise (?bearing) but i am having difficulty identifying if it is the blower or cooling motor. As the noise is subtle how can I be sure? Is the blower belt driven as I was told that belt spray may solve the problem. Also, as the noise is so subtle what is the immediacy of the problem?
