5 I don't doubt your husband nearly ripped it apart. I was considering taking a hammer to mine before I figured it out. And I figured it out WITHOUT any help from Kidde's website, since there is no evidence it ever made this detector (perhaps the company is ashamed). Here's the issue: Like almost all smoke detectors, we take off the cover and look for a battery. This doesn't work with the nighthawk. Think of the entire detector as the cover and unscrew it from the ring holding it in place to the wall/ceiling. Then unplug the detector from the three-prong connector that connects the detector to the household wiring. You open the battery compartment from the UNDERSIDE of the detector (the side that is flush with the wall/ceiling). It takes a 9v battery. Note that there is a plastic piece that flips up when you remove the battery. You have to push that down with the replacement battery so it goes back into the compartment. Otherwise, you can't close the door and reinstall the detector. Once you replace the battery, plug it back in and rotate it back into a locking position in the mounted ring. Also, do yourself a favor and wear hearing protection. My ears are still ringing from it screaming at me while I was up on the ladder fixing it. HATE THIS DETECTOR.
