How does one know if the outside air intake vent i...

How does one know if the outside air intake vent is open if the Outside air lever has become disconnected? And how does one get the spring and lever properly reconnected? There does not seem to be enough room to take out the draft control unit on the NZ25 woodburning fireplace. Any suggestions? Thanks
