I cannot get my Montgomery Ward sewing machine to ...

I cannot get my Montgomery Ward sewing machine to zig zag with the cam inserted at the top. Either I am doing something wrong, or there is a problem with the machine. It sews straight stitches fine otherwise. Any help is appreciated. It is a model UHT J1273. Thanks!!
