Question About Kenmore Dehumidifier 5941

I have an older dehumidifier, Kenmore model 5941. For some reason, when the bucket fills with water and the float gets to the top, it no longer turns off the unit. I never noticed if there is something the float moves to turn it off. Right now, it just looks like there is a thin metal strip that the float touches, but it does nothing.
