the presser foot doesn't seem to "advance" no matt...

the presser foot doesn't seem to "advance" no matter what the fabric is or the settings are. As a result, ALL settings for stitch length end up giving me a 20+ stitch!!! I cannot find a way to get to a "basting" stitch!! |I'm beginning to hate this machine, and am glad I kept my 1973 Kenmore!!
