5 Replace thermocouple. Any big box store should carry it. Simple to replace. The thermocouple is a little copper type wire running from the gas valve into the water heater and end right at the pilot flame. The pilot flame heats the thermocouple and tells the valve that it is ok to let gas flow to the burner. If it is bad it won't let the pilot light or stay lit. You can you tube on how to replace the thermocouple. Hope this helps
