heat pump is keeping temperature in house ok, but ...

heat pump is keeping temperature in house ok, but stage 1 heating element not coming on when heat pump goes into defrost mode. aux lite coming on on the thermostat in defrost, but air temp from register gets cooler when in defrost mode.
