5 I'm sorry to hear that this problem occurred. I've ran into this on a few similar units and unfortunately what happens is on the motherboard when you use the remote it melts the components together and causes it to freeze up on the time like you stated is happening. Then it cools down and can return if a different method is used. I would advise not doing this to avoid the components melting together for good. If it bothers you a lot you could replace the air conditioner. Otherwise to get a new board it would be a similar price as the original. Sorry there is no easy fix.
