2001 Ford Escort ZX2 A/C works sometimes but latel...

2001 Ford Escort ZX2 A/C works sometimes but lately not at all, I went to have it charged but it was full.....how would I know if the problem is either the "filter" that tells the sensor to turn on, or if the compressor is no good? HELP me please the cost between the two is huge!
