5 Just an idea it could be this. The Hot Surface Ignitor Again, a rather simple device in a complex system. The hot surface ignitor uses electrical power to create heat so hot, that the element is able to ignite natural gas This very fragile, charcoal-like sort of element glows red hot when active and ignites the natural gas or propane as it is released by the gas valve. Once released from the gas valve, the gas is passed through tiny little holes in a fitting called an orifice. There is one orifice per burner port and the first burner port that receives gas is where the hot surface ignitor is located. This way the gas is lit immediately as it's introduced to the port. Again, this is so that there is no build up of gas in the unit. Some furnaces employ what is called a spark ignition. The theory here is the same except that instead of a red hot surface to ignite the gas, a spark is created multiple times to insure proper ignition. Whether you have hot surface or electronic ignition in your furnace isn't really the important thing here. The fact that you are not using a pilot light is the best part. Pilot lights burn gas constantly during the heating season and for many, year round. Want to save a few dollars? Make sure you shut off the pilot on your furnace when it's not being used for the season. Just be sure you know how to relight it next year before you do.
