When we turn on our Model130000 Dirt Devil upright...

When we turn on our Model130000 Dirt Devil upright, it makes a terrific high pitched and very loud noise. There is also kind of a burning smell. Any suggestions on how to proceed? Are there service manuals available for this model that would help solve the problem?
