when I switch on my des14 dehumidifier, it starts ...

when I switch on my des14 dehumidifier, it starts up as normal, then almost immediately the pause light shows orange and it slows down and practically stops working, sounds like it's straining to work. I've changed the filter and the water bucket is empty. What could this be?
