Is it normal for the ouside condenser unit to be covered with heavy frost in the heating season? I just opurchased this home and am unfamiliar with heat pump operation and the previous owner left no manuals.

5 Howdi: I'll try to answer your question. It is normal for a heat pump to get a frost coating during certain temperatures and Humidity. Your unit has a defrost timer that when operating correctly will defrost the unit automatically. You can normally hear this occur during the defrost cycle and it makes a kind of Wooshing sound and water vapor can be seen rising from the unit. Your unit has a timer that can be set for a amount of run time before it automatically goes into a defrost mode. If for some reason the defrost module was not working you would see that the heat pump was not heating correctly and your aux coils would be coming on more often. Have you ever seen the vapor and heard the noise I talked about ? That would tell us if it was normal or not?
