My BRK smoke detector continues to go off for no reason. The house is 11 years old and these detectors have been doing this several times a year. The family has become complacient with the alarms. What can I do?

5 I have exactly the same problem - started 10/2/08. I've seen a few other forums suggesting the life of these was only 10 years... Inside the bottom of the battery compartment it says to replace the Detector by 2005 - i'm going to start buying replacements!

4 Same problem w/ mine -- started chirping and replaced battery w/ no help. I called BRK and was told that the replacement model for the BRK 86RAC is the 9120B; they added it has same plug-in mechanism, slightly modified mounting, however.

4 I have 7 of these and have been getting false alarms for a couple of years. I just went through, pulled off the cover by releasing 3 snap on clips and thoroughly cleaned the insides with a vacuum cleater, focusing on the ionization unit with a small brush. So far, all's quiet on the smoke alarm front
