I have an Avalon wood insert. Cannot remove the br...

I have an Avalon wood insert. Cannot remove the brass catch on the inside of stove in order to remove washers so that the door will shut tighter. Have a new handle assembly but the brass catch seems like it may have the same problem. Could cut the old assembly off but may have the same problem with new one.
