We went to change out a broken thermostat...replac...

We went to change out a broken thermostat...replaced it and didn't work...replaced it with another one that supported heat pump and still didn't work. the honeywell support people told us that it was the unit that was bad and now we have no idea how to tell whether it's the thermostat or the unit??
