Air Shutter adjustment for Flame
®
Guard (L.P.-30T only)
Important: On initial startup, condensation is normal. If
unit is condensating, wait until it has stopped
condensating before inspecting burner flames for
proper operation. With the water heater on and the
burner lit, inspect the burner flames through the
viewport and compare them to the drawings in figure
18. A properly operating burner should produce a soft
blue flame. Blue tips with yellow inner cones are
satisfactory. The tips of the flame may have a slight
yellow tint. The flame should not be all yellow or have a
sharp blue-orange color. If the flames are not
satisfactory then it may be necessary to adjust the air
shutter. If you lack the necessary skills to perform the
adjustment properly you should not proceed, but get
help from a qualified service technician.
1. Remove the manifold assembly using the
instructions on page 21.
2. Remove the two screws securing the burner to the
manifold assembly, then separate the burner from
the manifold assembly (see figure 29).
3. While holding the burner, loosen the air shutter set
screw, and rotate the air shutter to adjust air flow to
burner (See figure 30). Rotating the shutter to allow
more air to the burner sharpens the flame, while
restricting the airflow softens the flame. Once
adjusted, tighten the set screw.
4. Using the instructions on page 23 replace the
manifold door assembly.
5. Verify proper operation of the water heater. If
further adjustments are needed repeat process
beginning with step #1 above.
