bobbin case wont turn so needle will not move

    A common problem with the 221 is a tread jam inside the bobbin/shuttle area. First remove the needle if possible. Then remove the needle plate. There is a very small screw holding a curved gib hook on the shuttle. This may be difficult to remove use caution. Then you can swing the gib hook out of the way and carefully remove the bobbin retainer. When the machine is resting on the hand wheel the top facing away from you the pivot on the gib hook should be at 6:00. Do not turn the hand-wheel with the gib hook unscrewd as it can be bent. The thread caught in here is often the problem. The bobbin case/retainer comes out only one one way use caution to not damage it. You may want to consider taking this to a dealer if you feel it necessary to force anything. Note the needle plate locates the hook with a positioning finger between two holders. It is important to get the finger between these two holders.
