Question About Singer Sewing Machine 7444
sewing heavy denim...

Need advice re: needles, thread, special settings, etc. Have a SInger 7444 and eventhough I bought heavy nylon thread and special denim needle, can't get the machine to sew thru 2 layers of denim. I am obviously missing something. Owner's manual is who knows where.....
