Wont heat water

Pilot light is on gets warm for few seconds and then cold..Had the water off for a pipe repair and when we turned it back on it sort of got really hot then stopped. Its quite old but cant really afford a new one is there a heat control knob or dial cant see where it is ? Ta deb
