Re : wiring issue

Hi ,
I have a T 8601D2019
Thermostat and when I wire it up like the diagram saids I get no display ? Do I wire it up with the white wire as the common . According to the daigram it's the Heat Relay wire , but the diagram shows that all the wires except the red are on the common side . I hook the white in the the common side and I get a display but the heater never goes off . Will I be able to fix this thru the programmming on the thermostat?
