Proper filter

I need to know how to install the proper filter. My unit is a downflow so the filter is above the blower. A 24x24x1 fits only if you crush in the sides. The user manual doesn't mention a 24x24. If I put a smaller filter in, i.e. 24x20 there are gaps on the sides. Any help is appreciated.
